Gestational diabetes test, do they give you the results same day?
Posted by admin on Nov 3, 2009
Did you get the results on the same day for you GD test, or did you have to wait?
Most generally, if the test is done in a lab setting, than the results will be sent to your doctor in a couple of days who will then have the nurse contact you. Are you referring to your one hour glucose tolerance test or did you have to go in for the 3 hour fasting glucose tolerance test? With my 4th baby, I had the one hour test and the nurse called me about 3 days later to set up arrangments to have the 3 hour test done since my 1 hour test was elevated. My 3 hour test results came back in a couple days and I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, which 3-5% of pregnant women develop. I did not get same day test results, but I suppose it is possible if your doctor had specific concerns and put a rush on the testing process.

I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The doctor put me on a strict diabetes diet and I have to test my blood sugar 4 times a day. Does anyone know of any foods that will keep me full but still follow the diabetes diet? This diet is leaving me starving for most of the day. Im 29weeks and 5 days. Please help.

Anyone who had GD during a pregnancy, did you develop it again during subsequent pregnancies?
Posted by admin on Oct 9, 2009
This only applies to women who had Gestational Diabetes during their first pregnancy, and have had more children as well.
Just curious, I know my chances are abnormally high and I plan to start watching my diet right away, but just curious if anyone did have it once and not the next time. ![]()
Thanks!
I had it with my first child and not my second. I am GD free with my son, but not with my daughter.

Just diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes–diet suggestions?
Posted by admin on Oct 9, 2009
Hi,
Anyone who has been diagnosed with GD, can you help me with suggestions for meals and snacks? I have heard that breakfast is an especially difficult one, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I am being put on the GD diet, as I failed the 1 hour and one of the 3 hour blood tests w/glucola, though I am not sure if it is "full blown" or if my doc is taking precautions for the baby & my health. Either way, I gotta do this, so let me know what you eat!! Thanks:)
I had Gestational Diabetes as well.
My dietician suggested that I have 30 carbs 3 times a day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then I would have 15 carb snacks in between these as well.
I liked Slim Fasts for breakfast. They are 23 carbs and have a lot of vitamins. Then I would have a banana or an apple, which is about 5 carbs.
Snacks were harder, but I liked string cheese, which is only about 1-2 carbs, I also liked Nature’s Valley Peanut flavored granola bars. They were 19 carbs a piece and the only granola bar that I could find that wasn’t way over in carbs.
Just pay close attention to the carbs on the labels and serving sizes. I made it the whole way through my pregnancy with just diet changes and never had to go on insulin. It is hard at first, but the longer that you are on this diet the easier it will seem.

How much protein is too much with gestational diabetes?
Posted by admin on Sep 27, 2009
How much protein is too much? I read that too much or too little can cause preeclampsia .. but I’m on the gestational diabetes diet & sometimes meat is all you can eat! (Well, of course vegetables, but it gets old eating the same thing day in and day out .. ) But how much is "too much" .. ?
I think you would have to eat a lot of meat to cause a problem …I had GD too and I just ate a normal serve each meal .
Gestational Diabetes During Pregnancy?

I am 27 weeks pregnant and recently was told that my GTT (gestational diabetes screen) came back that my sugar level was higher than normal. I have only gained about 15lbs total. And I don’t look any different. I am worried that I have diabetes. What are the chances and would my body change drastically that I would know something is wrong? Should i now just watch my sugar intake? Which food besides candy has the most sugar in it that I should stay away from? I’ll ask these questions at my next doc appoint. But curious to know some answers now. Thanks!
It is not uncommon for pregnant women to have high levels at their first GTT. I’m assuming it was the one hour test. Usually, your OB will request you take the longer, three hour test to assess for actual gestational diabetes (GD) due to the frequency of women failing the one hour test.
GD doesn’t necessarily cause any body changes, and it doesn’t mean you’ll have diabetes in its regular form. Generally, if you do have GD, it goes away after the baby is born. Weight gain is not necessarily an indicator of GD, either.
Mild GD is treated with diet and exercise. Avoid refined sugars – anything with corn syrup, table sugar, etc. Sodas, sweetened tea or coffee, candy, cookies, cake, etc should be avoided or in light moderation. Increase your fruits and vegetables and proteins, but keep in mind that fruit juice has high levels of natural sugar (not entirely good for you) as well as many brands having added corn syrup or sweeteners.
