Anyone had the gestational diabetes test?
Posted by admin on Nov 11, 2009
I am 24 weeks so I will be tested soon. I am AFRAID of needles & I have read if I fail the first test the second one requires blood being drawn several times within a few hours. DO they stick you 3 different times? Any advise?
You have nothing to be worried about. I did my first Gest. Diabetes test a few weeks ago. All you have to do is drink this small container of orange liquid (it tastes like flat orange soda so it’s better if you can keep it in the fridge) and then have your blood drawn exactly one hour after.
Having your blood drawn is not a big deal…just a small needle only once. If, however, you do not pass the test (and you’ll find out in about 2 days or so), then they do schedule you for the three hour test which is the exact same thing, but repeated every hour for three hours.
I wouldn’t worry about it…it’s quick and painless. If your afraid of needles, just look away and it’ll be over before you know it. Congratulations and good luck! You’ll be fine =0)
28 weeks pregnant and brown spotting/discharge normal?
Posted by admin on Nov 6, 2009
I’m 28 weeks pregnant and my discharge the last 2 days has been a little more brown. It’s not very heavy. Is this normal?
i haven’t had sex in weeks as I had a cerclage placed at 21 weeks. I don’t have any other sympotoms and the amount is not a lot/
Brown discharge usually indicates "old" blood… like blood that you’ve produced in the last couple of days that is just now being expelled.
Have you had sex within, like, the last 3 days? That’s usually the number one cause of spotting. It’s cervical bleeding, from your cervix being over-sensitive and filled with extra blood-vessels from pregnancy, and can bleed due to friction or constant touching (like from sexual activity) and there is no harm to you or the baby.
The other cause of bleeding is placental. This is where the actual placenta bleeds (for various reasons) and there is a 1 in 3 chance of miscarriage with placental bleeding.
I wouldn’t worry too much – unless you’re bleeding enough to soak two maxi pads (a general rule of my doctor), then it shouldn’t be any cause for concern (yeah right, right??
).
Just go to your doctor and get checked out if you’re really freaked out. But I’d say, at 28 weeks, you’ll know if you’re miscarrying .. I’m also 7 months and your baby should weigh about 2 lbs and be about 14 inches long. If you were to expell that, you’d notice!
Good luck, sweetie… just remember to take care of yourself!
did anyone with adult onset diabetes start out with hypoglycemia?
Posted by admin on Nov 6, 2009
i’m hypoglycemic and the information i’m finding goes back and forth about how it’s the beginning stages of adult onset diabetes. so i would like to know if anyone had hypoglycemia, didn’t treat it (still eating sugar and so on), and then got diabetes. can low blood sugar lead to high blood sugar? diabetes is high blood sugar right? see i really need some input.
yes i have had my blood sugar tested. what kind of question in that anyways?
go f*ck yourself, hoosier, you uppity prick. what basis do i have….jerk….i’ve had a very difficult time controling my hypoglycemia considering i was an alcoholic.
I’m type two and never had a hypoglycemic episode… for what it’s worth.
I’ve heard of it happening, but I have no idea as to what kind of frequency we’re talking about.
Yes, diabetes is a condition of high blood sugar… not always the same cause, though. That’s why there’s two major types…. one and two.
What effect does Alcohol have on a person with Hypoglycemia?
Posted by admin on Nov 3, 2009
I have a condition known as Hypoglycemia. It is characterized by a low blood sugar in the body and an over-secretion of insulin.
Most alcohol has carbohydrates and will spike your blood sugar. If no food is taken it will drop your blood sugar (especially in someone who has hypoglycemia) and you will pass out quick.
How many vials of blood do they take in a Gestational Diabetes test?
Posted by admin on Oct 30, 2009
Just curious because i HATE needles and i was told they take 8 tubes… And if i walk in there and they tell me they have to take 8 tubes im gonna turn around and walk back out, thats ridiculous… Im sorry. I am very stubborn when it comes to hospitals, doctors, and NEEDLES.
8 test tubes, ONE needle….
I am not sure how many tubed they take, I am pretty sure they just take 1 but they have to do one before the drink and one after the drink (if you’re doing the soda drink one) but they might have other tests they have to do that require more viles of blood….the different toppers go to different sections in the lab.
Good Luck
You’ll be fine.
what is a normal blood sugar for someone with hypoglycemia?
Posted by admin on Oct 30, 2009
As you have probably figuared out I have hypoglycemia. I don’t have diabetes. I would like to know the too high, too low, and normal blood sugar ranges thank a bunch.
The normal blood sugar level for someone who was hypoglycemia is 70 to 110 upon waking(fasting) and after meals it should be about 70 to 140. This is because you are not diabetic.
Can I use a home fingerstick blood test to test for hypoglycemia?
Posted by admin on Oct 24, 2009
I have been looking at the little machines for testing blood sugar and also the visual test strips like betachek visual. Can I use either of these for testing or hypoglycemia as I keep getting symptoms of it?
I have had blood sugar tested before at the docs and it was normal, but my symptoms seem to come on with exercise. I especially notice it in the city walking around a lot. So I was thinking I need to test blood suger then rather than in a doctor’s surgery. Thanks
sure you can! be sure to journal all the results: time, foods eaten or drank, activities at the time and glucose number.
here is a handy chart you might want to print up as the geocities service is going away:

Is it too extreme to purchase a glucose meter if you have non-diabetic hypoglycemia?
Posted by admin on Oct 18, 2009
I have non-diabetic hypoglycemia (not officially diagnosed). Does it seem too extreme to purchase a glucose meter to check my sugar levels? My episodes come on quickly and I would like to know what my sugar levels are before that happens.
Not at all, while the meters are cheap the test strips are not.. Why do you think your hypoglycemia does not indicate diabetes? In certain situations it can be a presenting symptom, as a high blood sugar can cause a surge of insulin causing your blood sugar to drop below normal, especially after you eat. I was thinking more about your question if you do purchase a glucometer should should check your blood sugar when you first get up and take another test in the afternoon around 3:00 pm because if there is a real problem with your blood sugar it would also show up in these tests. I suspected there was a problem with my blood sugar and I bought a glucometor. My sugar was elevated so I went and made an appointment with a dietician and joined a gym. My next appointment with by GP I told her about this and I had my blood sugar completely under control by myself. Good luck, Donna
what is the relationship between hypoglycemia and coffe?
Posted by admin on Oct 15, 2009
I have hypoglycemia. When I drink coffee, my blood sugar levels seem to drop in relation. Can anyone tell me if this is causal?
Quick answer: maybe. Current evidence suggests that caffine enhances the warning symptoms, rather than causing a drop in blood sugar levels.
At this time, the evidence is not quite strong enough to be, _scientifically speaking_, considered causal — especially in a non-diabetic person. However, the preliminary evidence is very suggestive of such a link.
EVIDENCE:
In a man with diabetes, "excessive coffee ingestion was associated with marked hyperglycaemia." (#1 – case report of only one individual)
"In type 1 diabetes, caffeine has been reported to enhance the symptomatic and hormonal responses to hypoglycaemia." (#1)
"Ingestion of modest amounts of caffeine enhances the intensity of hypoglycemia warning symptoms in patients with type 1 diabetes without altering the prevailing standard of glycemic control or increasing the incidence of severe hypoglycemic episodes." (#2. Only 34 patients in test: not a large enough population for making a causal link.)
"In healthy volunteers and patients with type 1 diabetes, acute ingestion of modest amounts of caffeine (250-400 mg, which is equivalent to 2-4 cups of drip-brewed coffee) markedly enhances the intensity of warning symptoms and the usual hormonal counterregulatory response to clamped hypoglycemia under laboratory conditions. However, although the perception of hypoglycemia is augmented by prior caffeine ingestion, whether low blood glucose levels will become associated with warning symptoms if caffeine is used on a daily basis is unclear." (#2. The time frame was only three months, again, not sufficient for a conclusive connection.)
Is there are difference between hypoglycemia and hyperinsulinemia?
Posted by admin on Oct 12, 2009
I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia a few months ago, but is it the same as hyperinsulinemia?
hyperinsulinemia leads to hypoglycemia, but hypoglycemia may mean you’re simply just not eating enough or often enough. hyperinsulinemia is producing too much insulin, resulting in high blood insulin levels. hypoglycemia means not enough sugar in the blood, or low blood sugar.
