gestational diabetes??? Question.?

Posted by admin on Jun 9, 2009

What is the consequence to the baby if the mother tests positive for gestational diabetes but receives no treatment for it?

Yes, it will add weight to the baby. It’s also been shown that it can add fat cells to the baby that will be there for life, and it increases your child’s chances of developing type 2 diabetes when they are older.

Also, there is a serious complication that can happen at the end of pregnancy where a diabetic’s placenta can start to deteriorate. It happens quickly and it can be deadly for the baby, so the chance of having a stillborn child is higher than a non-diabetic woman.

The diabetic complications are serious but they are PREVENTABLE. Treatment is usually some changes in your diet, possibly some insulin injections. It’s so worth it for the health of your child.

the baby will be bigger than normal and may result in a difficult birth / problems with the baby after birth (sometimes diabeties themselves)

normally treatment is just sticking to a healthy diet – no sugary foods, fat etc..

Over sized baby, breathing problems, as well as possible diabetes themselves.
I failed my first, and barely passed my second. Should have been put on a stricter diet anyway. I had a 9 lb baby girl who literally ripped me a new one (4th degree tear). And my poor girl, they came in to jab a needle in her foot every hour for 24 hours, to check her blood sugar. You couldn’t even touch her feet without her screaming her head off. She kicked the nurse so hard, the nurse lost her balance and almost fell. At that point I stepped up and told them to keep their hands off her. Its the most horrible thing to see your newborn in so much pain.

why would you not have any treatment for it. That is the most ridiculous thing that I have ever heard. It is a mother’s responsibility to take care of their child, born or unborn. It is usually just following a special diet. The diet really isn’t that bad. It prevents you from gaining too much weight during pregnancy.
