If I eat a couple crackers before my gestational diabetes test, will that mess it up?

Posted by admin on Sep 6, 2009

I’m taking the gestational diabetes test today for my baby and I wasn’t allowed to eat anything for 12 hours before the test and I can’t eat anything until after they’ve taken blood 3 times in 3 hours, so I won’t get to eat a thing until 1:30 this afternoon! That’s 16 hours without food and I’m starving already! Seriously, if i nibble a couple Ritz crackers, will that mess up the test results? I can’t take it anymore!

Yes, you’re not supposed to eat anything at all because food will affect your blood sugar level.

I know it stinks. I got so hungry and weak and ill feeling the morning of my test because of going without food that long. I had a snack in my purse, though, that I scarfed down as soon as the test was done!

It is just something you have to go through, unfortunately. Hang in there!

If they told you not to eat anything, don’t. don’t drink either. if they find out, they won’t do it. if they don’t find out, you may have false results on your test

if your doing the 3 hour test.. it means you failed the 1 hour test.. which means if you are not supposed to eat.. no, if you fail this test.. you are is a world of hurting because being limited during pregnancy isnt fun. having GD is not something to mess around with..
do not eat!!!

you need to phone them and ask ther advice – I think you will be told to go another day as you are supposed to fast.

when I had it done, I couldnt eat past 10p.m – only water, had test at 10 a.m – only 2 blood tests 2 hours apart = query why your having 3 – never heard that before

Do not eat anything 3 hours before your test. Or they will make you take it all over again.

Yes, its the three hour test. before the 1 hr test it is ok to eat but not this one. I remember i had to do that for my second. If you have eat you will have to reschedule. (if you can i would anyways and try to get the very first opening).

yes, it will definitely mess it up. Crackers will raise your blood sugar quickly…obviously you shouldn’t eat anything, but if you have to eat something maybe eat a small portion of cheese, or something high in protien, but do not eat anything with carbs.

It sound like they may be doing a 3 hour glucose tolerance test, and they will give you some sugary drink when you get there, which will make you feel a little better for an hour or two, and usually places will give you some juice or something when it’s over, but take a snack in your purse also. If you eat now it could mess up the test results. Anything with sugar or carbohydrates will raise your blood sugar. You are really supposed to be fasting. Something that’s nearly pure protein, like a bite of turkey might be able to sneak through. But if they find out you ate they might reschedule the test, so try and hold out.

I disagree. i think its ok. They forgot to tell me when my test was. So i had dinner and breakfast. The only thing they asked is if I had had anything too sweet to eat or drink. just my personal experience tho.

I know it’s hard but don’t eat anything. Carbs especially will throw off the results and could make your sugar high. Try to keep busy to keep your mind off your hunger. Try and fill up on water and plan a nice lunch for yourself after the test!

Hang in there!
