Possible gestational diabetes?
Posted by admin on Oct 21, 2009
I just received a call from my OB today and they want me to do the 3 hours testing because my glucose test came back and they said my sugar level was very high. Anyone here have had experience with getting Gestational Diabetes During Pregnancy? How was your experience? What did you do to control it? What was the outcome of the pregnancy? Thanks everyone, I am just really worried now about my baby ![]()
Yes, I had it with my 2nd baby. I am also at high risk for having it now with my 3rd baby. I will be going for my 3 hour test later this week.
I was able to control it with diet changes. My baby was born 10 days early but normal 7.5 pounds and all was fine.
I cut out white breads, pasta and potatoes. I cut out sugar. My doctor told me to eat low carb foods and to use splenda sweetener.
This time, I am doing the same thing already. I am eating whole grain bread from time to time. I am drinking Chrystal Light and found some great sugar free cookies.
I didn’t get it personally, but I know a couple of people that did. They were supposed to manage it with medication and diet but they didn’t. I would suggest seeing a nutritionist if you do develop it to find out how to eat and what to eat. Test your blood sugars often and take medication as prescribed. Also see your doctor as much as you can. The end result because of my friends not taking it seriously, were babies that weighed 9 & 10 pounds. Something about the high blood sugars if untreated make the baby bigger. Don’t stress and just take all the medical advice they give you if you end up having gestational diabetes.

I actually had the same thing happen to me, done the one hour got the call did the 3 hours, got stuck alot…then got the call everything is ok. If you do have it, it can be controlled easily with diet. Your baby may weigh a bit larger than normal. But dont worry to much until you do the next test, lots of people fail the first one and come out ok in the end.

i had it, they try to control it with diet if that doesn’t work you have to do shots( i did that not as bad as you think it doesn’t hurt just a slight pinch once in the while) baby came out at 6lbs 9oz. and had to be in nicu for 24 hours to watch her but she was fine but just to let you know my doctor told me this means you will someday be a diabetic! good luck

First, don’t start worrying now. It is actually very common to be high on the first test and be normal on the 3-hour. So there’s still a very good chance that you are fine. If you do have diabetes, the office will give you lots of info, mostly about foods to avoid. They may suggest more walking. Most people don’t have that hard a time with it, just having to cut out foods you are craving! My friend had it and had to make a few dietary changes. Otherwise, no problems and a perfectly healthy pregnancy and baby!
