Shame on your OB for adding to your stress. Like we don't already worry enough being pregnant. I'm overweight and have not had gestational diabetes. I've kept my weight in check and have been eating healthy, and I haven't had any problems. When I found out I was pregnant and started reading all the problems that can occur with being overweight, I was terrified. But then I read in a few different places that while being overweight does put you at a higher risk for some complications, it's only a slightly higher risk. (I wish I still had those websites so I could give them to you, but I lost them). Things can go wrong in any pregnancy, regardless of weight.
If you do end up with gestational diabetes it can be controlled. You'll be fine. It's hard enough being overweight, don't let your doctor make you feel worse about it.
Congratulations and good luck with your pregnancy!
References :
I was 29 years old and 200 pounds the first time I got pregnant. No gestational diabetes. Just keep your sugar and carbs under control so you don't stress your pancreas and exercise. I am older now and pregnant again. Wish I weighed less because I am worried about the GD too.
References :
I was about 20 pounds overweight when I got pregnant, and I have gestational diabetes. However, I know of someone who is morbidly obese and DIDN'T have it. So everyone is different. I've heard that if you are overweight to begin with, most doctors routinely send you for the GTT, or if you have a history of diabetes in the family. I would definitely go for the GTT just to be sure, but just because you may be overweight does not mean you will automatically have it. Good luck!
References :
37 weeks pregnant

I am overweight and I DO have gestational diabetes...but this is my 3rd pregnancy...never had it with the first two.
But my Mother and Grandmother were both diabetic, and I'm 36 so neither is a good thing.
You may or may not get it.
But, if I have learned one thing from it, I shall make sure get down to a healthy weight after the baby is born...I do not want to be diabetic ( I'm now injecting insulin 4 times a day)and I'll do anything to make sure that I don't develop it later in life!!!!!!
References :
Sounds like your doctor needs to not put stereotypes on you. I am overweight, and I went through pregnancy without Gestational Diabetes. Just be sure to eat good foods like whole grains and fiberous and cut out the sodas and sweets. If you do have it, it's not the end of the world. You are more likely to have it if you are overweight, have a history of diabetes in your family, have had previous children who were large babies, have had sugar in your urine. Don't stress, it's only about 10% of women who get it.
References :
I live in Arizona and am considered overweight because in the heat my body retains alot of water. Not to mention still having baby fat from my first pregnancy. I am 36 wks pregnany tomorrow and DO NOT HAVE gestational diabetes. Stay away from sugars is what my doc told me and I'm fine. I've gained ALOT of weight with this pregnancy, but my doctor is reassuring me it's mostly fluid. Don't let your doc get you down, I'd switch doctors. I started with a midwife and felt she was really cold so at 32 wks switched to my OB whom I absolutely love. This is your pregnancy, and it should be filled with happy memories not guilt or stress. Good luck to you hun.
References :
before I got pregnant I weight 110 and I gained so much so fast (well to me it's a lot im 140 and around 7mths) everytime I go to my doctors they give me such a hard time. Saying stuff like "oh you're gaining way too fast, you going to get gd." But when I tested I didn't come any where close of having it. I get pissed off every time I go.

I think if you cut out all starches and sugars and eat healthy then you will be fine.
References :
Just because you are overweight does not mean that you will get Gestational Diabetes! Don't stress about it until proven otherwise. Sounds like your doctor likes to scare people.

There are many 'skinny' women out there who are diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. No matter what your size, it is controllable as long as you follow the diet.

If your doctor continues to throw scare tactics at you simply because you are overweight, find another doctor :-) Better yet, see if a midwife will take you..
