Initially, I spilled sugar in my urine...this prompted them to do the one hour glucose tolerance test earlier than they normally would have....then I had severe pains in my right side, my OB sent me to the ER, and they ran some tests, then scheduled me for a 3 hour glucose test after I had blood sugar level of 500+ at the ER for no apparent reason.
I failed the 3 hour test, and so was labeled as gestational diabetic, but then it kind of levelled off with diet and close monitoring. It is only in the last couple of days my blood sugar has started to become difficult to control all over again, even with diet, but they say that is because I am nearing the end of pregnancy, and it isn't uncommon for it to worsen in the last couple of weeks.
Other than the above stuff though, I had no specific symptoms.
References :
with my first i didnt experience any, but i was diagnoised at 27 weeks, and had uncontrolled blood sugars until 37 weeks when i was induced, i really got to notice the signs when my blood sugar was too high and too low. with my son i started noticing signs of gestational diabities around week 15. i demanded them to give me a test and sure enough i was. with my son i started noticing shaky feelings when my sugar where too low. when they were high, i had this weird feeling cant really explain it, also irratible and i would start to sweat like on my brow line and the back of my neck. also when i did the glucose test, i noticed about 1/2hr in that i started seeing blury and kinda spots. unfortunatley everyone kinda acts or has a little bit of different feelings, the best way is if you do have end up having it, is to test when you start to feel funny, and you will soon learn what feelings mean what.

ok i just read some posts about people say you have big babies, but let me tell you this i was informed after having my kids that usually that is true but the opposite to that is you have smaller babies, and the lungs dont usually mature at the right time. my babies were 7.8 and 6.4lbs
References :
In hindsight I realized there were a few things that may have indicated I was developing gestational diabetes. Some of those indications were cravings of sweets such as chocolate cake (i normally never crave sweets), headaches, and constant fatigue. As for the fatigue I just figured that it was normal because of the pregnancy...the same for the cravings. The headaches were just a result of the high blood sugar. Thirst wasn't a factor because I was religious about drinking a ton of water. Much later did I discover that I was diabetic because I failed the 1 & 3 hour glucose tests.

The glucose test is routine but if you have concerns or a family history then let your OB know ASAP. The sooner you start to monitor the problem the better for you & your baby. Good luck.
References :
I recently had gestational diabetes develop with my 2nd baby.

I had Gestational Diabetes, I ended up getting it for some reason at 37 weeks pregnant. I had a doctors appointment, and of course you have to pee in a cup before the office visit. When they got the results it showed I had high sugars in my urine. From there I had to go over to the hospital and do the fun glucose test, I had to do it one other time in the beginning of my pregnancy, and the first test came negative. But, when I did the second time (when they noticed high sugars) I got a call informing me that I had Gestational Diabetes. So after I found that out, I had to make an appointment with a nutritionist and she gave me a glucose meter, guides on what to eat and what not to eat, and just some information on gestational diabetes. So yes, I had to poke myself 2 times a day, one before a meal and one about an hour after a meal. I was glad that I got it in the end of my pregnancy, but they say that once you get it during pregnancy, you can get it for sure with your others. The thing that scared me the most was the consequences of not eating correctly was having a 12 lb. baby since it is possible if you don't eat right. All of the sugars go right to the baby. So I definatly followed the rules of the diet. They gave me a chart which told me that I could have so many calories and carbs per day. It was hard because I would eat a lot before I found out!

Ok I am rambling on now, but the symptoms are pretty much found in your urinalysis at the doctor. If you haven't done the glucose test yet, first they draw your blood, then you have to drink this really sweet, yet discusting drink and then wait 3-4 hours before they draw your blood again. This is how they determine if you have diabetes.
References :
I really did not have symptoms of diabetes but most doctors test at 28 weeks and that is what made my doctor know I had it. This time around I think I might have it again since everytime I eat sweet foods it makes me nauseaus and very sleepy. If you are 28 weeks and your doctor has not run a glucose tolerence test then ask for one if you suspect you might have GD. It is a pain in the butt to have even if you are not insulin dependant...I had to go in during my first pregnancy twice a week after meals to have my blood drawn even though I didn't have to have insulin. Good luck and i hope this isn't a complication you have.
References :
The symptoms have nothing to do with your pregnancy symptoms.
What might cause your doctor to wonder if you have Gestational deabetes is if your blood pressure is high or you have sugar in your urine.
I got gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy. It got bad and I had to test my blood 4 times a day and had to give myself insuline shots 4 times a day. It was horrible. But in some cases you just have to check your blood and don't have to do the shots. You only do the shots if it gets really really bad.
With my second child I didn't get it. Sometimes it only happens with your first child and all the rest of your pregnancies will be normal and uneventful.
But for actual symptoms, there aren't any that you can look for.
References :
Mother of two

I found out I had gestational diabetes at 28 weeks. Honestly, I didn't have any symptoms at all. Only way I found out was when I failed my glucose tolerance test. My blood sugar was 207 on the first and they didn't make me take the 3 hour since I failed it so bad.

I never really had any symptoms at all. Just had to check my blood sugar 6 times a day and by the end of my pregnancy, I was on Metformin 2 times a day.

The symptoms I'd always heard were supposedly most prominent were excessive thirst, fatigue and dizziness. Excessive thirst is the only one that I would think might stick out as far as being abnormal, but if you're like me, you have days where you're really thirsty and days where you aren't. I've always been like that.
References :
I had no symptoms as well. I failed my one-hour glucose tolerance test by about 8 points. I then took the 3hour gtt and failed 2 out of the 4 blood draws, therefore getting diagnosed with GD. After getting diagnosed, I still never saw any 'side effects' or symptoms. I had to eat a low carb diet and was able to keep my sugars under control with that. Some women have to take meds if they can't control their sugars. Good Luck! E-mail me if you have any more ?'s I'll be happy to help you if I can!
References :
3 month old son!

I had gestational diabetes, and the only symptoms I had were sugar in the urine (normal for me), ketosis (protein in urine), and a strong family history, so they sent me for a test. My bloodwork numbers came back borderline, but some doctors insist I'm still diabetic.
You're right, the symptoms are similar in some ways, because excess weight makes type 2 diabetes worse. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after pregnancy, but can also indicate future type 2 diabetes in a person.
