Diabetes complicates about 8 percent of pregnancies each year. About 75 percent of these diabetic pregnancies are gestational diabetes—that is, the woman is diagnosed as having diabetes during the pregnancy. Of the remaining, 23 percent involve preexisting type 2 diabetes and about 1 to 2 percent involves preexisting type 1 diabetes.

The issues surrounding preexisting diabetes are slightly different from those faced by women who ?rst develop diabetes during pregnancy. Women who have diabetes before they become pregnant have to deal with glucose control at conception and early in pregnancy. If there are any diabetes-related complications, these may also have an impact on the pregnancy. Women who have gestational diabetes are faced with learning all about diabetes, including watching their diet and taking insulin, while pregnant

Diabetes during pregnancy is also known as gestational diabetes or toxemia. It is manageable if you catch it early and follow your doctors directives exactly! Junk food and sweets do not contribute to you getting this form of diabetes. It only makes it worse due to the way your body is processing sugar or not processing sugar for that matter. Get the test, follow your doctors orders impeccably and you and your baby will live. This type of diabetes can become permanent if not managed, as in daily insulin with needles if you arent careful! And yes, it is serious, can kill you, your baby or both!
And congratulations on your pregnancy! :D
