what do i do before my gestational diabetes test?
Posted by admin on Nov 15, 2009
do i have to fast or what?
my docter just told me to go to the lab at the docters office and have it done but i cant remember if she told me not to eat or drink anything before…?
can anyone help please?
If I remember correctly, it is a fasting test. You can’t eat or drink anything else before or after until the test is completed.
The drink you drink is full of sugar and tastes NASTY….like flat orange soda or flat fruit punch that is loaded with sugar.
And you have to tell the people that are doing your test that you are fasting……and make sure you look at the time when you drink it……they have to do the test w/in an hour of you drinking it…….and you have to drink it w/in 5-7 minutes…you can’t just sip on it for an hour. Which is a bummer. I just gulped it down because it was quicker.
Anyone had the gestational diabetes test?
Posted by admin on Nov 11, 2009
I am 24 weeks so I will be tested soon. I am AFRAID of needles & I have read if I fail the first test the second one requires blood being drawn several times within a few hours. DO they stick you 3 different times? Any advise?
You have nothing to be worried about. I did my first Gest. Diabetes test a few weeks ago. All you have to do is drink this small container of orange liquid (it tastes like flat orange soda so it’s better if you can keep it in the fridge) and then have your blood drawn exactly one hour after.
Having your blood drawn is not a big deal…just a small needle only once. If, however, you do not pass the test (and you’ll find out in about 2 days or so), then they do schedule you for the three hour test which is the exact same thing, but repeated every hour for three hours.
I wouldn’t worry about it…it’s quick and painless. If your afraid of needles, just look away and it’ll be over before you know it. Congratulations and good luck! You’ll be fine =0)
I have anxiety about my gestational diabetes test?

I have really bad anxiety and just by drinking soda or anything really sugary, I get anxiety attacks. I can kinda control them but I hate getting them. Is the drink really high in sugar?
don’t worry the drink they have you drink isnt great but it isnt to bad. It’s like a orange flavored sugar water. I just chugged mine to get it over with.
Gestational diabetes test, do they give you the results same day?
Posted by admin on Nov 3, 2009
Did you get the results on the same day for you GD test, or did you have to wait?
Most generally, if the test is done in a lab setting, than the results will be sent to your doctor in a couple of days who will then have the nurse contact you. Are you referring to your one hour glucose tolerance test or did you have to go in for the 3 hour fasting glucose tolerance test? With my 4th baby, I had the one hour test and the nurse called me about 3 days later to set up arrangments to have the 3 hour test done since my 1 hour test was elevated. My 3 hour test results came back in a couple days and I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, which 3-5% of pregnant women develop. I did not get same day test results, but I suppose it is possible if your doctor had specific concerns and put a rush on the testing process.
How many vials of blood do they take in a Gestational Diabetes test?
Posted by admin on Oct 30, 2009
Just curious because i HATE needles and i was told they take 8 tubes… And if i walk in there and they tell me they have to take 8 tubes im gonna turn around and walk back out, thats ridiculous… Im sorry. I am very stubborn when it comes to hospitals, doctors, and NEEDLES.
8 test tubes, ONE needle….
I am not sure how many tubed they take, I am pretty sure they just take 1 but they have to do one before the drink and one after the drink (if you’re doing the soda drink one) but they might have other tests they have to do that require more viles of blood….the different toppers go to different sections in the lab.
Good Luck
You’ll be fine.
What is the best flavor for the gestational diabetes test?

And did you vomit after drinking it?
Did you pass or fail?
it seems like everyone is saying orange, however, I had to take it twice, the first time I was given the orange, it is SUPER SWEET, all most too much, the second, I had the fruit punch, it taste like Hawaiian fruit punch, not bad, but the key is to down it!
Good Luck!

How important is it to have the gestational diabetes test?
Posted by admin on Oct 24, 2009
I don’t think I need it, but I may be wrong. So far I am 24 weeks and haven’t put on any weight, would that make me lower risk?
I know it’s a stupid reason, but I have a needle phobia and they can never find my bloody veins. Why can’t there be a urine test or something?
Great, I have 4 weeks to try not to freak out about the needle : (
PLEASE, please, please do it. I didn’t gain any weight either and had none of the additional risk factors. Because I lacked the risk factors, my doc decided it wasn’t important to do. Well I wasn’t feeling right at 35 weeks and finally said I thought we should do it and while my doc looked at me like I was nutty, I pushed to have it done. THANK goodness I had done that. I ended up failing the test and have been diagnosed with the condition. That’s almost 10 weeks lost that I could have been making the changes necessary to treat it. Even if you don’t have it, it is definitely worth having the test done to be sure.
Good luck and let me know if you end up having gd and need any advice.
If I took my gestational diabetes test at 24 weeks, was that okay?

or too soon? I am 31 weeks. the results were normal. I am just wondering also if I had say type 1 diabetes or even type 2 (though i’m very slim so i doubt that) would that have shwoed up on the test? does gestational diabetes screen for all types of diabetes?
It’s supposed to be done between 24-28 weeks, so you are fine! You were tested and cleared of any sign of being a diabetic!!! I didn’t have it with any of my pregnancies until this one, which is my 4th. I failed the first 1 hr test, so now I go back for the 3 hr…. I hope you have a great pregnancy!!!!! Congrats!!!!!!
What’s the latest doc’s will wait to do a gestational diabetes test?
Posted by admin on Oct 18, 2009
I know that they usually do the test around 28 weeks and such but my husband and I just got stationed to another state and I had a doctor’s appt. about 2 1/2 weeks before I left. The doctor said I needed to be seen around 4 weeks later (he was not my usual doc so he didn’t see that I wouldn’t be here). Anyways I just got set up at the hospital here in the new state and had to wait a few days to be in the system and I’m calling to schedule tomorrow and sometimes they can get me in right away and sometimes in weeks. So what is the cut off to get the test done if any? Thank you.
I do not believe there is a cut off. They usually check after finding protiene in your urin at your visits. Good luck ask the obgyn they should be able to test you any time. But ask the person when schedualing they can tell you if that is a possibility.
