Silly question but are these signs of having gestational diabetes?
Posted by admin on Oct 15, 2009
I am being tested for gestational diabetes next week. I am considered high risk for developing it because I am over 25 (I am 27), there is a family history of type 2 diabetes, and both my biological grandma & mother developed gestational diabetes during their pregnancies. Now I am paranoid that I have it, and have been consciously watching my carbs & sugars.
I have gained 26 pounds (gradually), and I measured normal at 24 weeks. I am 5’10" and weighed 150 prepregnancy with a very athletic built.
I have been getting comments from people that I am huge and/or I am going to have a big baby. Is showing significantly and my weight gain indicators that I might have gestational diabetes? Any one else been told they are considered high risk for gestational diabetes but didn’t end up getting it?
Thank you for all of your help.
Hey, wasn’t even told I was high risk and I had it. I’m 27, weighed 112 before pregnancy and 140 when I gave birth and I’m 5’3". So I was skinny everywhere except for my belly. I was border line gestational. I had to take a class on how to watch carbs.
Don’t eat anything with carbs the night before the test. if you fail the first one, Eat something like Cheerios the morning of the second test.
When I went to take the class, I was the only skinny prego in there, so there is a possiblitly. Good, luck. I’m sure you will be fine. My son and I are!
Type 2 Diabetes during pregnancy.?
Posted by admin on Oct 12, 2009
I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes with my previous pregnancy and it never went away so I now have type 2 diabetes. I am 11 weeks pregnant now and am a little worried about what effect this is going to have on this baby. A midwife I spoke to said that type 2 can turn into type 1 during pregnancy, it sounds a bit unreal but if anyone has got type 2 diabetes and pregnant, please let me know what you are doing to control your sugars etc. Thanks
Type two diabetes does not turn into type one diabetes. Perhaps she means that you will need insulin. Just because you need insulin doesn’t mean you are a type one diabetic. Type one diabetes and type two diabetes are entirely different diseases with entirely different causes and mechanisms. Ask your endocrinologist for more information and education.
Anyone who had GD during a pregnancy, did you develop it again during subsequent pregnancies?
Posted by admin on Oct 9, 2009
This only applies to women who had Gestational Diabetes during their first pregnancy, and have had more children as well.
Just curious, I know my chances are abnormally high and I plan to start watching my diet right away, but just curious if anyone did have it once and not the next time. ![]()
Thanks!
I had it with my first child and not my second. I am GD free with my son, but not with my daughter.

Babies born to moms with Gestational Diabetes?
Posted by admin on Oct 6, 2009
I failed my glucose test today and go for the three hour test on Thursday.Has anyone had Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy and how did your baby turn out? I know he will be on the larger side, but what else should I prepare for?Doctors always minimalize stuff and I would like to hear from someone with experience having a baby with this condition.
Just to give you a heads up…this is just from my aunts experience that i know of…her four kids all were born with hyperglycemia and basically they already had the trait for diabetes. They just have to watch their weight and their diet, but they are not necessarily going to get diabetes.

What is the process of the gestational diabetes screening during pregnancy?
Posted by admin on Oct 3, 2009
I have a question regarding the procedure of the diabetes screening, what its all about.
My doctor told me to drink a glucose drink one hour before my appoinment, then she said she will do some screening… but i kinda confused about the process of this screening itself. As i understand they will take some blood sample and check the level of sugar in my blood? So blood is taken from the vein or from the finger? And i have an appoinment in the evening, does it mean i should not eat before that? Or my appoinment has to be in the morning only?
What happens if they come to know that level of sugar in the blood is higher than normal?
Thank you in advance for all the answers.
Thank you for the answers, i guess there was some confusion about the screening process as my doctor didnt tell much about it at all, even for what kind of diabetes they are going to check my blood. I came to know about the details from the internet already. So most probably, i’ll take a leave from the office and go there just in the morning.
I am 37wks. preg and was just diagnoised with Gestational Diabetes at about 33 wks.
All they are going to do is draw blood and send it off to the lab. if your sugar levels are high, they will schedule you for a 3 hr. glucose test where you will have to fast you will not be able to eat anything after 12 a.m. When they draw your blood this time it will be every hr for 3 hrs.
You may not have anything to worry about. The test is mandatory, a word of advice is to not eat anything sweet at all before you take the test because it can cause your results to come back negative and you dont want to take the 3hr. test for nothing

Gestational Diabetes/Stress During Pregnancy?
Posted by admin on Sep 30, 2009
I am almost 32 weeks pregnant…I have had by far one of the most stressful pregnancies. First, with the uncontrollable morning sickness. Second, the horrible infections that have not and will not stay away. Third, the daddy of my baby is currently in jail and facing a good amount of time. The list goes on and on… Bills, trying to pay for a huge house alone, struggling with anxiety disorder during pregnancy. The doctor is a little worried about the size of the baby… It seems to be SMALL! From stress maybe?? Now after taking my glucose test they said my results came back in the 160′s and are supposed to be under 140. I can’t stand this anymore!!!!! It’s like one thing after another, I feel like having a mental breakdown. If anyone has been in any type of situation like this or even situations similar to… please, please let me know.
Your sugar being around 160 I wouldn’t worry too much about. Yes it’s high but not too too high I’ve seen much worse.. There is nothing you can do about the diabetes so take a breath. But because of the diabetes you are more likely to have a larger baby who can’t handle it’s blood sugar after birth. The good thing is most of them adjust well pretty quickly. I’ve been taking care of a gestational diabetes baby the past 2 days at work and he adjusting well and don’t expect him to stay much longer. But his mother’s glucose was well into the 200′s. You are almost done. It seem like forever but you are almost there. Try not to stress to much because you will stress out the baby too. As for anxiety your OB should be able to give you samples of Zoloft or Cymbalta which are safe during pregnancy and will help with the anxiety and depression. You are doing everything that you can possibly do and stressing about it won’t help. It will just make you feel worse. You don’t need high blood pressure too. Calm down. Stick your feet in a hot bath and try to relax. Good Luck and hang in there.
What cases a bigger baby than normal during pregnancy other than gestational diabetes?
Posted by admin on Sep 27, 2009
My last baby was 10.3 and I did not have gestational diabetes.
I ate all the time as I was hungry all the time. I gained A LOT weight. I smoked more then 12 cigarettes a day with him. And I was 7lbs when I was born.
