Can gestational diabetes cause numbness in legs? Will this numbness go away?
Posted by admin on Nov 15, 2009
I am 3 weeks postpartum and I had gestational diabetes during my pregnancy. I have to admit that during the end of the pregnancy I did not follow my diet like I should have. Well I noticed that my legs started to feel numb from my knees down to my ankles. The weird thing about the numbness, it’s only on the inside of my legs. I heard this is called peripheral neuropathy. Do I need to see a doctor? Can this be corrected? I am very concerned. What is done when a nerve conduction study is conducted?
Gestational Diabetes is no different from other forms of diabetes, except for the cause — pregnancy.
In most cases it WILL go away after you deliver. However, if you do not work to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight and form, the diabetes might stay with you.
Peripheral Neuropathy is a sign of diabetes that has been present for a long time — several months usually. This means that you may have been diabetic BEFORE you got pregnant, and that you may also remain diabetic after you deliver.
After you’ve delivered, the doctor can best advise you for continued treatment, if necessary. If you remain diabetic for more than about 90 days after delivery, the doctor should refer you to an ENDOCRINOLOGIST for treatment as a possible Type 2 Diabetic.
Anyone with gestational diabetes?

Hi just a question for anyone who has suffered from gestational diabetes … during my pregnancy i got gestational diabetes – i was on 36 units of insulin 3 times a day by the end so it was not a pleasant time!! I was just wondering what the chances were of suffering with diabetes in my next pregnancy? Are there any mums out there who got diabetes in one pregnancy and not the next one?? or is it guaranteed that i will get it again?
Does anyone know how to reduce your chances of getting it? (I am not at all overweight and have normal BMI so don’t tell me to lose weight! lol)
Thanks in advance for your answers ![]()
Statistically, 60-90% of women who had Gestational Diabetes with a pregnancy will develop it in subsequent pregnancies. So, it is not guaranteed 100% that you will have it again, but the chances are fairly high that you will. The development of Gestational Diabetes is not based on anything you do or don’t do. It is true that older moms and overweight moms have a higher risk of developing Gestational Diabetes, this does not mean that all overweight older moms will develop it nor does it mean that young, skinny moms are protected from developing it. Gestational Diabetes develops due to the pregnancy hormone making your cells insulin resistant. In most women, their pancreas is able to produce more insulin to compensate for the insulin resistance, but in about 8-14% of women, their pancreas can not keep up with the additional need and Gestational Diabetes develops. Many women can control their blood glucose numbers with diet, but sometimes insulin is needed. I had Gestational Diabetes with my last pregnancy only. I worked closely with a nurse in the diabetic clinic who devised a meal plan for me. She taught me how to use the blood glucose monitor than at each prenatal visit she went over my numbers with me and adjusted my diet to help me stay consistent. I actually had more problems eating adequately so had low blood sugar issues more commonly than high numbers. I did not need insulin, though. I did not have a large baby. My daughter was born at 41 weeks weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces. I don’t believe there is a way to reduce your risk of developing Gestational Diabetes as there are too many variables that come in to play as to why some women develop it and others don’t. Hormones are one of the reasons Gestational Diabetes develops and we all know we can’t really control hormones.
Gestational Diabetes question?

Hi, has anyone been really overweight when fallen pregnant & not suffered from Gestational Diabetes during that pregnancy? My OB is convinced I’m going to get it due to my weight, I’m due to have a GTT in next couple of weeks but told her I had one just prior to falling pregnant & it was negative. My pregnancy was not planned, I was about to go on a strict diet & exercise program to lose weight & never planned to get pregnant but it just happened but my OB has me stressed about all the things that can go wrong given my weight in this pregnancy.
Just because you are overweight does not mean that you will get Gestational Diabetes! Don’t stress about it until proven otherwise. Sounds like your doctor likes to scare people.
There are many ‘skinny’ women out there who are diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. No matter what your size, it is controllable as long as you follow the diet.
If your doctor continues to throw scare tactics at you simply because you are overweight, find another doctor
Better yet, see if a midwife will take you..
diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy?

im 31 weeks prego with my 3rd baby and was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I have never had diabetes before and dont know nothing about it. I am known for having 9 lb babies though. im worried, scared, upset at myself. What should i expect from this? will my gd go away after the baby or will i always have it? will my baby be ok or have problems? please i need some advice from women who have or have had gd before? thanks so much in advance!
well what you should expect is to have your dr tell you one way to control it is through what your eating. Keeping foods with simple sugars out and keeping simple carb’s to a low as well will help. yes it will go away once you’ve had the baby. May take a bit of time but yes it does. GD can cause problems but only if you allow it to get out of control, if you do what your suppost to, you should have no problem.
Protiens ie such as chicken is a good food. I know when i eat chicken it drops my blood sugar, vegi’s that don’t have a high sugar, celary.
Also get walking! lots of walking….cant stress that enough walk walk walk….or if you can get in a pool, ( i don’t know if you can be in a pool and pregnant, sorry if you can’t) but even getting in a pool and moving there will help tremendosly
Anyone have diabetes during pregnancy?

I am 15 weeks pregnant and I had gestational diabetes with my last child. I am going in for a early glucose test in two weeks, but the doc wanted me to start pricking my finger and testing now just so she can see what is it usually. The last few day I have been feeling shakey and have a headach and just can’t seem to control my blood sugar. The doctor never told me what a normal pregnant blood sugar should be. Does anyone know? It has been 60 before and right now its up to 210. Which way should it be, up or down?
The only thing with sugar I have had today is a glass of caffeine free coke.
I have type 2 diabetes and have since I was 2 and I am now 25 and have a beautiful 9 month old son. When you are pregnant the Dr’s don’t want you bloodsugar above 130, it sounds like they need to put you on insulin for your gestational diabetes. The was it was explained to me, that no matter how low you bloodsugar is (which from the syptoms you are describing it sounds like a low bloodsugar) the baby will be fine, but the higher your bloodsugars are it uses more of the oxygen in the amniotic fluid therefore taking away the amoniotic fluid from the baby which is not good. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions, and good luck.
gestational diabetes…for women who have or had this during there pregnancy?

this question is for women who have actually had diabetes or have this during there pregnancy..i wanna know what symptoms u had that made u or your doc believe u had diabetes? what i read online sounds like symptoms are the same as pregnancy..please give your symptoms in details..thanks
In hindsight I realized there were a few things that may have indicated I was developing gestational diabetes. Some of those indications were cravings of sweets such as chocolate cake (i normally never crave sweets), headaches, and constant fatigue. As for the fatigue I just figured that it was normal because of the pregnancy…the same for the cravings. The headaches were just a result of the high blood sugar. Thirst wasn’t a factor because I was religious about drinking a ton of water. Much later did I discover that I was diabetic because I failed the 1 & 3 hour glucose tests.
The glucose test is routine but if you have concerns or a family history then let your OB know ASAP. The sooner you start to monitor the problem the better for you & your baby. Good luck.

Diabetes during pregnancy?

My Dr wants me to get a diabetes test done and I am 23 weeks pregnant…Are gestational diabetes like regular diabetes? I am a bit worried about this since type 2 diab. runs in my family. I have been trying my best to steer clear of junk food (I have a really bad sweet tooth!) but have also given in quite a few times to cookies, etc during my pregnancy…is that going to contribute to me getting this form of diabetes?? How serious is it??
Diabetes complicates about 8 percent of pregnancies each year. About 75 percent of these diabetic pregnancies are gestational diabetes—that is, the woman is diagnosed as having diabetes during the pregnancy. Of the remaining, 23 percent involve preexisting type 2 diabetes and about 1 to 2 percent involves preexisting type 1 diabetes.
The issues surrounding preexisting diabetes are slightly different from those faced by women who ?rst develop diabetes during pregnancy. Women who have diabetes before they become pregnant have to deal with glucose control at conception and early in pregnancy. If there are any diabetes-related complications, these may also have an impact on the pregnancy. Women who have gestational diabetes are faced with learning all about diabetes, including watching their diet and taking insulin, while pregnant

Possible gestational diabetes?

I just received a call from my OB today and they want me to do the 3 hours testing because my glucose test came back and they said my sugar level was very high. Anyone here have had experience with getting gestational diabetes during pregnancy? How was your experience? What did you do to control it? What was the outcome of the pregnancy? Thanks everyone, I am just really worried now about my baby ![]()
Yes, I had it with my 2nd baby. I am also at high risk for having it now with my 3rd baby. I will be going for my 3 hour test later this week.
I was able to control it with diet changes. My baby was born 10 days early but normal 7.5 pounds and all was fine.
I cut out white breads, pasta and potatoes. I cut out sugar. My doctor told me to eat low carb foods and to use splenda sweetener.
This time, I am doing the same thing already. I am eating whole grain bread from time to time. I am drinking Chrystal Light and found some great sugar free cookies.
Moms and pregnant moms: Gestational Diabetes and pregnancy?

I was just told I have Gestational Diabetes….I see the nurse on Monday but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this and what happened during your pregnancy and after? Does it go away? I’m 31 weeks along. I know I can read up on it but I’d rather have personal experiences. Thank you.
I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy. And frankly, aside from having to watch what you eat, it’s not that big of a deal. Just listen to what your doctor tells you and follow his orders so that way, your baby will be safe. And I do believe they go away after you have your baby. Mine did. However, I think it makes the risk of developing diabetes later on higher.
