How much protein is too much with gestational diabetes?

Posted by admin on Sep 27, 2009

How much protein is too much? I read that too much or too little can cause preeclampsia .. but I’m on the gestational diabetes diet & sometimes meat is all you can eat! (Well, of course vegetables, but it gets old eating the same thing day in and day out .. ) But how much is "too much" .. ?

I think you would have to eat a lot of meat to cause a problem …I had GD too and I just ate a normal serve each meal .

Can hypoglycemia be treated in babies and how long does it usually take if it does?

Posted by admin on Sep 27, 2009

Can hypoglycemia be treated in babies and if it does how long does it take? My baby weighed 8 lbs when he was born and has been in the hospital for 11 days now. Can it be treated? Am I over reacting, I cry alot and just want him to come home already?

Calm down. My brother and I were both born with hypoglycemia; both of us are in our 20′s and reasonably healthy :) He’s un-naturally tall, but that’s another story :p Of all the things for them to catch in that newborn screening, this is by far one of the better problems to have – it’s easily managed.

The great news is that they caught it in the hospital! :) My mom fought for 2 days to get them to test us. We have never needed meds, it’s managed totally through diet. Both of us have always needed frequent small meals. Neither of us can have a lot of sugar (like soda), and we both have to watch eating too many carbs. Sugar and carbs won’t like, kill us, we just crash after about an hour. Veggies and fruit and lean protien are the best things to eat.

I have learned to feel when my sugar is low and eat. In elementary school, I fainted a few times til I got the hang of it. Once I did, I was totally fine; the nurse kept yougert and fruit for me in case I needed to eat. It’s not, like some horrific condition. None of the kids ever knew.

Talk to your doctor. I’m sure they have some good feeding tips and ways to treat it. My mom, brother and I have this for life, but some types of hypoglycemia are transient, meaning they are fixed and don’t come back. Before you take your son home, make them talk to you and explain everything and tell you what you need to do in his case. I’m sure he’s gonna be fine.

The other poster is right, MAKE them tell you what kind of hypoglycemia it is. Like is is related to diabetes, just a thing that happend cuz he was born (my cousins had low sugar after taking 3 days to be born…), or is it a freak genetic thing like mine…. (missing some enzyme…).

Oh, and btw, Congrats!!! :) :) :)

Is it normal to feel sick and dizzy during the 1-hour gestational diabetes test?

Posted by admin on Sep 24, 2009

After I drank the gross drink, I felt very sick, as if I could pass out. Is this normal? Does this indicate I might fail the test?

Your feeling sick because

First of all you have to fast before you take the test, meaning you have nothing in your system then you drink this sugar drink. That’s why you felt dizzy and sick. I felt the same way when I took I the test with all my 3 pregnancies and soon I’m going to feel the same way when I take the test with this pregnancy.

No that doesn’t mean your going to fail the test.

Gestational Diabetes?

If you get gestational diabetes during pregnancy will you have diabetes for the rest of your life?

Not necessarily. I had it and after the pregnancy approx. 3 months later My sugars were back to normal. u must exercise and be careful about what you eat during the pregnancy otherwise your body will think high sugar is the norm and then you will end up diabetic. GOod luck!

Any tips re diet for Gestational Diabetes?

Posted by admin on Sep 24, 2009

Just been diagnosed and now on 3 tablets per day – you build up over 6 days. Sugar levels are all over the place it seems no matter what I eat and feel wierd most of the time – like I need sugar and can’t have it! Any tips? I know what I should be eating as my dad was Type 2!

Your sugars should get better as you get more medication, but they start you slowly (metformin, right?) because if you get it all at once you have gastrointestinal distress.

For now, concentrate on switching over to 5-6 small meals a day, always with whole grains or other low-glycemic carbohydrates. Never have a carb without a protein. Get plenty of protein and veggies.

It helps to get away from sugars and sweet stuff because then you stop craving it. However, there are a few tricks. One trick I’ve used that really gives you a rich chocolate flavor is to take unsweetened cocoa powder (I like the dark chocolate variety) and mix it up with light cool whip. If you only have like a 1/4 cup at a time it’s about 30 calories and it’s not enough to raise your blood sugars. Eat it really slowly and it tastes like chocolate mousse.

Also, SF ice creams and all the products with splenda taste a LOT better than they used to! The danger is not to have too much, and as gross as it sounds, if you can have some protein at the same time as some SF ice cream it will keep your blood sugar from spiking as much. So I always make myself have like a piece of cheese first, then I have my little mug or bowl of SF ice cream.

Good luck, I know the metformin can make your stomach hurt, so hang in there. And there is always insulin! Insulin works very well in pregnancy, but I think they figure they are more likely to get women to take their medicine if they don’t have to inject it.
